What I will say, however, is that I am very shocked at how crazily fast fashion has gyaru-able clothes recently. I don't want to say that hasn't always been the case but it really hasn't been until recently. I think the whole throwback thing translates extremely well and works.
Old school stuff has been growing on me lately. Not because of gyaru persay but because this brings me back to a happier time in my youth. Even if I do partake in certain trends and do gyaru-style eye make up I don't see myself tanning or doing anything too wild any time soon (except maybbbe some blonde streaks if I get bored enough....hmmm...)
Today's feature is a store called Shein. I was so surprised to find specific pieces that really screamed 2000s and in also a gyaruable way. So I thought I'd share some of my top little picks that even I have indulged in. I always doing these type of posts because stores like this aren't only just affordable but also are size-friendly. Something that really discourages me from buying vintage is how fucking expensive vintage Japanese-brand pieces can be and how child-sizes they are. I'm a bit curvy now and even at 114 pounds in my youth-there was no way I would fit into the Alba minis or whatever based on how my body was built. So I'd refreshing seeing a nod to those brands but in an accessible way.
With many people being limited to domestic shipping right now due to mail kind of being halted when it comes to international orders (unless you wanna die paying DHL), I think this is a good way to kind of have fun with your style still. Especially if you're participating in the whole throwback wave that has popped off for awhile..
Split Thigh Geo Skirt
We're starting off a bit tame with something that is very 00s. Geometric patterns in interesting color combinations is very memorable to me. I love how this looks and I can see it work for both a trend-forward look outside of gyaru as well as gyaru. Maxi-skirts are extremely comfortable and if you've put on weight like I have over the years and aren't fully adapted to it, skirts like these make you feel a little self-conscious about your legs during the summer.
Floral Print Layered Ruffle Skirt
Here is where I got a little bit shook with Shein. Rainbow on black? A mood. Hibiscus? Gyaru as fuck. A TIERED LAYERED MINI'? CHECK! This is a piece I could see the infamous gyaru brand Alba Rosa doing easily. You could undoubtedly pair this with some Alba Rosa. And the cool thing about Shein? They're size-friendly/have sizes. Nothing has been more frustrating for a couple years than buying vintage Cocolulu and Alba and it being child-sized. I understand it and maybe one day I'll be able to get back into shape, but until then, things like this make me happy because it's attainable for everyone.
They also have this in a wrap-skirt version which is what I got actually because I hate my knees. LOL
Floral Print Wrap Knot Skirt
Here is the wrap version if the tiered-mini isn't your cup of tea. I personally bought this one because I felt like it would look a bit more mature on its own. :) Plus I could wear it to class if my school has classes in person eventually.
Tropical and Graphic Print Split Hem Skirt
Okay, this SCREAMS Tiara/My Favorite Tiara. More importantly, it comes in an XL and can FIT to be a mini-skirt you know? I'm so excited to buy this piece and wear it with my new platforms. Honestly, I've wanted to by Tiara for awhile but I knew I was curvy and that I might really have a hard time fitting it. I'm definitely coming to terms with being a clothing collector when it comes to brand but this really spoke to me because it's very similar to something Tiara would have done a bit back. I'm actually a Tiara girl more than I would be an Alba girl if I had to choose an old school brand. I also like the 60s/70s vibe that old Cocolulu gave off.
Elastic Waist Scarf Print Skirt
This is another piece that really reminded me of Tiara with the while variations of animal print. They were huge on that and making clothes that were kind of neutral. I'm pretty sure they indulged in delving into color too but I remember seeing a lot of really neat neutral pieces from My Favorite Tiara. :) Once again, this is a mini skirt that is size friendly and is very affordable. I'm really excited to try this out.
Neon Orange Scallop Trim Halter Top
I feel like this has more of an old-school onee-gal vibe. In the 90s especially, gals would wear sleeveless high necked halters or sweaters. It seems like this trend is making a slight resurgence.
Star Sequin Heart Patched Cami Knit Top
This top is super old school vibes. I really miss tops with blingy crystals but I'll take a good glitter top. This is a really cute basic you could wear with shorts or jeans paired with a good platform and some colored sunglasses. It's a way to spazz up a basic top.
5PC Rhinestone Heart Ring
This isn't limited to gyaru but they're really cute crown rings that slightly remind me of SakuRina's collab with DUB as well as the very popular Justin Davis crown rings. And at half the price! I thought I would add them in here! :)
Eyelet Lace Up Knot Ruffle Trim Skirt
This isn't a throwback piece, but it's definitely trendy and I had to include it. Liz Lisa, Ank Rogue, and Ma*rs all have done skirts like this with a body con style, ruffles, and some sort of lace up front. It's very larme-y but you can definitely make this trendy gyaru with the right hair and make up. Bodycon and lace-up details are considered sexy while the ruffles are very cute. It's kind of like a fluffier version of agejo if it's done right.
Flounce Raw Hem Denim Skirt
There's something about denim and skirts like this that bring me straight back to my childhood. They also remind me of Ai Yazawa. They're like a blend of Shibuya and Harajuku in the late 90s. Throw a cute spaghetti strap with a graphic print in the middle, wooden clogs, and one of those cowgirl hats and you have a classic throwback look.
Ruffle Neck Contrast Mesh Fitted Top
Polkadots are super trending this season in J-Fashion brands. Specifically, heart polkadots, but I think something like this would still be equally as trendy considering there is a ruffle mesh with the polkadots. I can see this being paired with the lace-up ruffled skirt I mentioned a few items back previously!
Mixed Print Bodycon Dress
This doesn't have the chains and glitter details d.i.a would have had but omg this print is still something d.i.a would have busted out. You could always add in your own crosses, chains, etc. I had to add this into my finds when I saw this based on the print alone. Rest in fucking pieces d.i.a spec, you will be sorely missed. :( But ya'll were getting really fucking plain with bad English graphics on your shit anyway...
Foliage Print Overlap Skirt
There's something really strange about this wrap skirt that stands out to me. It's tropical print but reminds me of fucking couch colorways. I've never seen anything like this and I kind of like it....
Faux Pearl & Rhinestone Decor Open Toe Sliders
Pretty sure Rady has something similar to this except in their Chandelier design. Regardless, it reminds me of some classic Rady!
Floral Print A-line Skirt
There's that obnoxious daisy print shit in limegreen that I kept talking about a few posts back. This is a different rendition of it but this definitely is taking inspiration from that era. This definitely reminds me of some old Cocolulu.
Button Front Fishtail Hem Denim Skirt
Hi, there's that obnoxiously extra denim in the weirdest cut ever and I LIVE for it. Once again, clogs, cute t-shirt, thick basic headband, or if you're dumbly extra one of those cowgirl hats and you got the fucking 00s. You could also wear a bandana I realized too.
Strawberry Patched Lettuce Trim Knit Top
Tops like these are very late 90s/early 00s. It's a graphic raglan but the newest little twist to this throwback is to give it a lettuce hem! I can see with easily with denim and a platform or whatever. It's something I'd associate with Popteen back in the day.
Anyway, here is my post for this month. Are there any pieces that stand out to you this round? I even bought some for myself. Would you all like a haul video when I receive my items? Let me know! Until next time guys~
Ommmgggggg you're making me want to shop at this site now. I have heard from so many people where they get so much of their cute stuff and it was this shop Dx

Some of the stuff I've gotten is hit or miss but in terms of entertaining something that is trendy and wanting to try it out-it's good for that! :) They have some cute PJs too. :o
DeleteHi Darla ~ I haven't been around in a while, glad the blog is active!! Love your posts and yeah I feel very much the same in regards to these kinds of throwback fashion - I was alive when these were cool, but I was like 7 so I guess I spent all my life waiting for the inevitable throwback and now in my late 20s it's almost like I'm too old LOL.
ReplyDeleteHowever, personally I feel that (and that's the same vibe I got from your March post) latin craze that's been kinda going on in music in the West for a few years now are also kinda hyping up these forest/greenery/flowery prints that are unlike the rosey/hibiscus/etc of golden gyaru days (ie. the 90s). I think it's a new brand of greenery patterns and I say this as someone who has a lot of interest but basically no formal knowledge in fashion whatsoever. Dunno if it's just me? (I wasn't very much on manba gyaru either so maybe that's be why ; )
Seconded on being a sucker for all the unnecessary frills. Really diggin the ruffle necked mesh black top. It's also very larme-able I feel, so yeah, double points for me lol.
As for the shoes I guess I just spent all my life looking for high platform shoes any/everywhere, because they're cool/pretty/I'm short/I cosplay/can't survive livehouses without them, so I screamed a lot with the April post. Talk about a missed comeback.
Anyway, hopefully I'll be around earlier for June's post! Thanks a lot for this!!

Hello, hello! :) I can totally relate to feeling too old for this Y2K trend. I'm trying to not let my age get to me so much and just participate where I know I can make it work since this is my ideal era/the one I romanticize the most. I want looking up vintage shit even on ebay since forever ago so imagine my thrill when this stuff came back into style.
DeleteI definitely can see where Latin influence could also be coming from too. Especially since you're from that area. The palm tree print I associated with MeJane because it's a pretty iconic gyaru brand. One of the first and they used that motif a lot for their clothing and shopping bags back in the day. MeJane btw is actually associated with Ma*rs-MeJane made Glamorous Jane which was ma*rs before ma*rs. This is actually why I think ma*rs is still surviving. MeJane's thrown all their previous investments that were hyped all into Ma*rs/PriMelo currently. But yeah, other than associating that type of print with MeJane I can see it be inspiration from JLo's infamous Versace green gown (ha, could you call it that?) that had kind of a similar print. Gyaru has a ton of celeb worship lowkey (or it at least it did in the golden eras) so I wouldn't be shocked if there was inspiration from a ton of different places. <3
I'm noticing brands are coming in with really chunky platforms and that 60s/70s style dip lately and I am living for it. Now is the time to get platforms if you've been waiting. ;) and omg livehouses and platforms are a wild combo. Rest in pieces to your poor feet. #shortgalproblems
Yeah, totally get what you mean too guess I spent my whole life waiting for y2k become cool again.
DeleteI may be off lol, it's just an impression I had from well, basically going to/being gifted fast fashion clothes - I got a palm tree dress myself for birthday, and it's not my thing so I wanted to swap but that's literally all they got. And it reminds me of Camilla Cabello's style so that's where I'm coming from (,, well that and those latinish tropicalish kpop mvs probably. Oh, really? I know MeJane by name obviously but I wasn't aware of its motifs! In fact I don't think I've ever seen personally a piece of MeJane clothing. @_@ I was kinda aware of that story but I guess it's one of these brands I feel distant to either because it's too expensive for me or just peaked before I could purchase anything ; ; :( Yes, definitely a possibility. It's not really lowkey but agreed on the rest lmaoo
It's so gooooood! Ah well I find them really comfy, maybe because I'm used to wearing ridiculously huge platforms even if it's out of fashion lol. And, well, there's definitely the added factor of "at least NOW I can see SOMETHING" so eihhh
